Cloud Foundry Summit took place on 5/11/15 and 5/12/15 in the Bay Area.  I attended the event on both days and really enjoyed the experience.  There were lots of sessions on the technologies.  There were also many companies on the floor doing interesting demos.sap presentation cf summit.jpg

What I do want to share here is the questions we got most frequently at the SAP booth.  Since SAP is a gold sponsor of this year’s event, we received lots of questions on what SAP’s plan is with CF as well as how our next gen HCP is going to evolve with CF.  Here are three facts about SAP and Cloud Foundry moving forward:

  1. How does SAP tie into CF?

SAP is one of the founding platinum members of the CF Foundation.  We started looking into CF as early as 2011.  And we are committed to the open platform for our customers and partners to run their business in the cloud in real time.

We are currently an active contributor to CF.  It is also our plan to leverage CF in our next generation HCP, which will be available in Beta later this year. When CF is fully integrated in our HCP stack, users not only will be able to leverage the rich resources coming from the SAP universe, they will also be able to utilize build packs and the services that come with CF. In other words, in the near future, SAP is going to provide a well-rounded PaaS solution to our customers and partners as well as developers.

  2. Is SAP using the public, open source CF and extending it?

SAP uses the open source CF.  We are not using/extending the commercial product of Pivotal. We are collaborating with them on the open source components of CF.

  3. Can customers develop apps on HCP leveraging CF and publish them?

Yes, once the Cloud Foundry runtime is available in HCP, anyone who has an account can start building and publishing applications on HCP, thereby utilizing the resources from both SAP and CF.
